I’m not sure what “rock AND roll” means. I didn’t write it that way. I wonder if someone’s passive-aggressively trying to tell me I’m doing it wrong. I’m fairly certain I’m going by AP style, but whatevs.

I hate writing live reviews sometimes. I never know what to say. I mean, this review could have been summed up with the words, “Matt Verta-Ray. Holy shit.” But I had to say more than that.
So out came this review with which I’m not terribly pleased, because I ultimately spent more time extolling the dreaminess of MVR and his guitar chops. And then at some point I thought I might describe the music too so I started throwing in random buzz words in random spots. Lord.
Seriously, the guy’s impressive. He’s such a freakin’ good guitar player and I’m glad I got to see it live. And he asked me if I was a professional chef, or some crazy shit. It didn’t make me give him a better review, but it did make me internally squeal like a 12-year-old meeting a Jonas Brother.
The delectable Matt Verta-Ray takes the lead on “Good Man,” the best song on Heavy Trash’s new record Midnight Soul Serenade. Jon Spencer’s also part of this outfit, but I’ve discovered I love Verta-Ray more. *gasp*
Oh, did I mention this record is one of my Top 20 faves of ‘09?
